April 2nd Electrical equipment preparation document

Numerous people have suggested that any electrical equipment either be on a surge suppressor or unplugged to prevent a power surge when the power is reconnected. Computer equipment will be off and the power either unplugged or turned off at the surge suppressor.

John will issue a command to shutdown all linux machines at 5:40pm. All other machines will be turned off by hand, so having your machine already off is helpful.

Instructions to faculty/staff It would be helpful if faculty and staff would turn off their own equipment. If you would rather turn off your own equipment, please add a post-it to your office door that marks your machine as already turned off. Something like:

  • Comp off - your initials

If you don't have an office door, plug a postit on your monitor instead.

Instructions to graduate students We'll make sure the computer in your office is turned off. Computers staff need to check to see if linux machines are on a surge suppressor or plugged directly into the wall. If they are directly plugged, they should be unplugged. If they are on a surge suppressor,
