Letters of Recommendation

For M.S. and Ph.D. candidates, postdocs, or instructors leaving the university, your professor(s) should submit their letter of recommendation(s) to the Chair’s Assistant. When letter(s) of recommendation are to be mailed to prospective employers, you should submit a set of addressed envelopes to the Assistant for processing. On request, two packets will be kept for you; e.g., one for research oriented institutions and one for primarily teaching schools.

Typing addresses (on envelopes) is the responsibility of the graduate student, as is the cost of postage. If an institution should write to a professor requesting a letter of recommendation be sent, it will be sent at Department expense.

The Chair’s Assistant also handles the requests from former graduate students who have returned to the job market after at least one year away from Madison. Procedures will be given directly to people in this situation.
